A USED car seller caught driving without insurance claimed the car had broken down and was being towed.

Aaron Brophy (23) said he and a friend were breaking the car down and sending its parts to Nigeria.

Judge John Coughlan fined Brophy €150 and banned him from driving for two years.

The defendant, of Rathminton Close in Tallaght, was found guilty before Tallaght District Court of driving without insurance at Ardmore Drive in Tallaght on January 14.

Gardai said they saw Brophy getting out of a Toyota Camera, and asked him to produce his insurance documents, which he failed to do.

Brophy denied driving the car, saying it was being towed.

However, gardai said there was no tow rope and he was in the driver's seat.
