Thief steals family car with baby boy in back

A MAN who stole a car with a four-month-old baby boy inside it was completely unaware the infant was there.

The little boy's mum and dad were left terrified after the thief snatched their family car with their baby boy inside it from Newport Village, Co Tipperary, yesterday afternoon.

Their nightmare sparked a massive garda car and helicopter search for the stolen vehicle.

The thief was arrested several hours later and the baby boy was reunited with his relieved parents. Sources close to the investigation told the Herald the thief was "completely unaware" there was a baby in the car when he took it.

"He was completely unaware the infant was in the car. As soon as he realised the baby was there, he took the necessary steps to reunite him with his parents," a source said.

Abandoned

The man (61), who is from Limerick, arrived in Newport by bus and stole the car at 3pm when its owner popped into a nearby shop.

Gardai were alerted immediately as the man drove 30km to Nenagh, upon where he abandoned the car on the street and disappeared into a shop.

Gardai later arrested the man in Birdhill, on the outskirts of Limerick some 22km away.

The man was bailed last night and was scheduled to appear before Nenagh District Court this morning.

The baby was reunited with his parents shortly after he was found in Nenagh and was not harmed.
