Thief had nothing to tell court in his defence

A handbag thief has been jailed for eight months after he declined to offer a court any mitigation for his crime.

Stephen Talbot (41) helped gardai retrieve some of the victim's belong- ings by showing them where the bag was dumped.

However, Judge Grainne Malone said her only option was to sentence him because she had nothing to consider in his defence.

Talbot, of St Teresa's Gardens in the south inner city, pleaded guilty to theft.

Dublin District Court heard the incident happened at Hamilton Street in Dublin 8 on May 24 last year.

Gardai were called after a car window was broken and a woman's bag was taken.

Talbot was later stopped near his home wearing the clothes that had been described to gardai.

He helped them by saying where the property had been dumped and some of it was recovered.

His barrister said it was an unusual case as more could be said in favour of the accused by the prosecution than the defence.

He said Talbot had made admissions straight away. He was already in custody on other matters when he appeared in court.
