Teen who grew drugs avoids jail
A TEENAGER with a keen interest in horticulture who bought cannabis seeds in a head shop and was growing them "just for fun" has been ordered to complete community service.
Joseph Byrne (19) bought the cannabis seeds for €40 and was stunned when he later discovered he had over €2,500 worth of drugs in his garden shed.
Byrne claimed he was just "experimenting" with the cannabis plants, was feeding them every day and had "no clue" as to their value.
The defendant previously admitted to two counts of possession of cannabis herb and cannabis resin at his home at Cloonmore Park in Tallaght on August 14, 2009. He had also admitted to cultivating genus cannabis without a licence.
At Tallaght District Court, Judge James McDonnell said Byrne had co-operated with the probation services, and ordered him to complete 200 hours community service in lieu of three months detention.
