Teen denies stealing car

A 17-YEAR-OLD boy has denied stealing a car and leading gardai on a chase.

The boy appeared at the Children's Court yesterday where he entered not guilty pleas to charges of stealing €30 worth of beer cans from a north Dublin shop, on March 12 last, travelling as a passenger in a stolen car, on December 22 last and stealing a car in Lucan, in west Dublin, on May 21 last.

The teenager, who was accompanied to his case by his older sister, was remanded on bail pending a hearing in July.



Coasters star dies aged 83

Carl Gardner, the original lead singer of the R&B group the Coasters, has died. He was 83.

Gardner's wife Veta said her husband died at a Port St Lucie hospice, Florida, following a long battle with congestive heart failure and vascular dementia.

The Coasters had a string of hits in the late 1950s, including Searchin', Poison Ivy and Young Blood.

Their single Yakety Yak reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 following its 1958 release.



Girl accused of thieving spree

A 14-YEAR-OLD girl used a tinfoil-lined bag to steal hundreds of euro worth of clothes and cosmetics from shops in Dublin city centre, a court was told yesterday.

The girl, who is originally from Romania but is living in Dublin, appeared at the Children's Court yesterday to face three theft charges.

The girl, accompanied by her mother, pleaded not guilty to the charges and was remanded on bail pending a hearing of the case next month.



AA spies catch motorists out

Almost 5pc of drivers are not wearing seatbelts, an AA survey of 40,000 vehicles in England has shown.

The motorists said its volunteer "streetwatchers" had been monitoring drivers at junctions and roundabouts across the country.

They had found that 4.92pc of drivers were not wearing seatbelts, 33pc were not indicating, nearly 10pc were going too fast, 3.6pc had faulty brake lights and 0.23pc were using mobile phones.
