Teen (19) blames drugs for attack
A TEENAGER who walloped a man over the head with a plastic bottle claimed he was just "play-acting" and "having a joke", a court heard.
Stephen McDonagh (19) -- who was given was given an 11-month sentence -- claimed he and the victim were friends and he didn't intend to hurt him.
The defendant said he went off the rails last year after he became addicted to head shop drugs. The court also heard that McDonagh's father was murdered in 2005 and this had a profound effect on him.
The defendant, of Newcourt in Swords, admitted before Swords District Court to assaulting the man at Glasmore Park in Swords shortly before 8pm on January 15.
McDonagh also admitted to two counts each of public drunkenness, and failing to appear in court, as well as stealing two bottles of wine, worth €20 and to trespassing on a business premises on North Street in Swords.
The judge fined McDonagh €1,700 and sentenced him to a total of 11 months' detention.
