A father-of-one who stole a roll and a soft drink from a convenience store has been told to pay €100 compensation to the shopkeeper.

Kyle Humphries (27) "made a mistake" and forgot to pay, a court heard.

Humphries, of Donore Terrace in the south inner city, pleaded guilty to theft.

Judge Anthony Halpin adjourned the case to a date next month and said he would put the accused on a peace bond if he paid the €5.55 cost back to the shop.

Frustration

The judge acknowledged the "frustration" of shopkeepers when people walked out without paying.

Dublin District Court heard the incident happ-ened at Spar, Drimnagh Road, last June 27.

The owner said two men had gone into the shop and taken rolls and soft drinks and left without paying.

The owner followed them, and when gardai arr-ived he pointed them out.

When questioned, Humphries admitted he took the goods, and said he had money but forgot to pay. The other man absconded.

Humphries had not given gardai any trouble and was "very forthcoming", his barrister Joseph Mulrean said.
