'Screams scared off trespasser on roof', court told

AN ALLEGED burglar was disturbed by the screams of a young woman as he made his way over a flat roof to the open window of a house, a court heard.

Anthony Leonard (38) allegedly ran away from the scene when the woman started to scream. The accused, of Mulgrave Terrace in Dun Laoghaire, appeared before Dun Laoghaire District District charged with burglary and criminal trespass.

The alleged incidents took place at Maretimo Gardens and an apartment at Maretimo House in Blackrock on June 22 last.

Garda Gary Burns said he arrested Leonard on Patrick Street in Dun Laoghaire at 12.15pm on Tuesday afternoon.

He was taken to Blackrock Garda Station where he was charged with the offences. The court heard the DPP has directed summary disposal of the matters in the District Court.

Garda Burns told the court that Leonard climbed up on to a flat roof and was heading towards an open window when the owner saw him and screamed.

The garda alleged that the defendant ran away when he saw the woman.

Garda Burns also alleged that out-of-work Leonard broke into an unoccupied apartment on the same night and stole two mobile phones, a camera and an iPod. The court heard the defendant was arrested after new fingerprint evidence came to light.

Gardai objected to bail, and the defendant was remanded in custody to appear before Cloverhill District Court next Wednesday.
