Scratchcard thief caught cashing in his winnings
A robber who was caught by gardai after he cashed in scratchcards he had taken the day before from his local news-agents has been jailed for a year.
Garret Guinan (25) of Ruthland Avenue, Crumlin, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to robbery of the newsagents in Terenure on April 5, 2011. His had 33 previous convictions for road traffic and drug offences
Detective Garda Brian Grealy said a shop assistant was coming out of a back storeroom when he saw Guinan coming in carrying a large knife.
He ran back into the room and blocked the door while watching the raid on security cameras. He later gave gardai an accurate description of the raider. A short time later the assistant noted that a new book of scratch cards was missing and reported it to the gardai.
The following day Guinan cashed in the winning scratchcards in another shop. These were traced back to the newsagents in Terenure and Guinan was arrested at his home after gardai identified him on CCTV footage collecting his €107 winnings.
