A MOTHER of four who shoplifted to feed her alcohol addiction has claimed she has been surrounded by drink her whole life.

Natasha Rice (28) has received treatment for alcohol addiction in the past, but accepted she has not made sufficient efforts to stay sober.

Judge Anne Watkin imposed a six-month sentence but suspended four months of it for a period of 24 months.

The defendant, with an address at Kiltalown Avenue, Tallaght, admitted before Dun Laoghaire District Court to stealing two bottles of wine worth €25 from Fresh Supermarket in Smithfield last December 1.

She also took clothing valued at €38 from Heatons, The Square, Tallaght, last November 24 and a bottle of vodka worth €34 from Dunnes Stores, Quinsborough Road,Bray, last April 1.

Defence lawyer Marc Murphy said Rice has battled an alcohol addiction for a number of years and stole the alcohol due to her addiction.

In her evidence, Rice claimed she grew up surrounded by drink. She said she has tried detox programmes in the past, but had relapsed. She said she has not attended Alcoholics Anonymous.

Judge Watkin told her she "is an adult and has to deal with her drinking".
