Mechanic stuns his parents by roaring abuse at gardai

THE PARENTS of a young car mechanic who roared insults at gardai and struggled violently with officers outside a nightclub were "shocked and horrified" at his behaviour.

Daniel Barker (20) tried to get out of a patrol car after he was arrested and handcuffed and a garda van had to be called to bring him to the station.

Judge Patrick Brady fined Barker €750 and ordered him to complete 150 hours' community service in lieu of five months in prison.

Barker, of Elmwood Park, in Swords, admitted before Swords District Court to threatening and abusive behaviour and failing to follow the directions of gardai.

Garda Barry Connor said he was called to the scene of a public order disturbance outside Velvet nightclub on North Street, Swords, around 3.30am on December 4 last.

Garda Barry Connor said Barker was told at least three times to leave, but refused, was verbally abusive to gardai and struggled with officers when they tried to arrest him.

Defence solicitor Fiona D'Arcy said alcohol was the catalyst for Barker's behaviour. She said his parents were shocked and horrified at his behaviour and were taking the matter very seriously.
