A man has been charged with attempted robbery after a Co Louth betting shop was targeted.

Norman Rowan (46), of Tinure, Dunleer, was arrested after the incident at the Bar One bookmakers on Main Street, Dunleer, at 5.30pm on Wednesday.

During the attempted robbery, a lone man, whose head was covered with a plastic bag with holes cut out for the eyes, entered the betting shop.

He left empty-handed a short time later after allegedly threatening staff members.

Mr Rowan appeared before Judge John Coughlan at Dundalk District Court yesterday morning, when he was formally charged.

He was then released on bail with conditions to appear before Drogheda District Court on January 12 for the Director of Public Prosecutions' directions and a jurisdiction decision in the case.

During the incident, the alarm was raised and gardai responded, with the assistance of the Regional Support Unit, and made the arrest a short time later. There were no reports of injuries to staff or customers.

The betting shop was open again for business yesterday.

CCTV footage from the branch is being examined by gardai.
