A man found carrying a "massive Rambo-style knife" in Dublin city centre last New Year's Eve said he found it in a bag and planned to give it to someone as a present.

Dariusz Wantura (49) thought the knife was "gorgeous" and made a "ridiculous" drunken decision to keep it on him, a court heard.

Gardai found the knife when they searched Wantura because they thought he had a gun, but it turned out to be a child's toy, which he had also found and thought was "hilarious".

Judge Paula Murphy gave him a three-month suspended sentence after he pleaded guilty.

Dublin District Court heard gardai on the beat at Marlborough Street last December 31 searched the accused as they believed he was carrying a gun.

They found a pellet gun in his pocket and a "large hunting knife similar to what Rambo would have", a garda said.

Stoned

Wantura was "drunk and stoned out of it", at the time, he said. He had previous convictions for public order and other offences.

He had a serious issue with alcohol, his solicitor Kate McGhee said.

Wantura had lived in Ireland for 11 years and worked until alcohol became "more prevalent" for him.

He became homeless, which led to street drinking.

On the day in question, he found a bag with the items in it next to a bin, and keeping it was a "ridiculous thing to do".

Ms McGhee said he "thought the gun was hilarious" and was not charged in relation to that.

As he believed the knife to be "beautiful", he planned to give it to someone as a present.

Wantura accepted it was a "massive Rambo knife", but it was not being brandished in any way, Ms McGhee said.

"He was intoxicated. It wasn't the cleverest thing he's ever done," she added.
