Man is accused of knife attack

A man has been accused of assaulting a woman and slashing her hand with a kitchen knife during a row.

Derek Smith (24) of St Anthony's Road, Rialto, appeared before Blanchardstown District Court charged with assaulting a female and producing a knife during the course of a dispute.

Smith, right, is also accused of damaging a mobile phone in the incident at St Ronan's Drive, Clondalkin on March 13.

The case was adjourned for three weeks.



Stroke victim escapes prison

A STROKE victim has been given a three-month suspended sentence for trying to stop the arrest of her daughter, who was beating a female garda in the face at the time.

Deirdre Scanlon (42) and her daughter Joanne Brannock (24) both avoided prison after admitting charges following the incident on a Ballymun street.

Brannock, of Silloge Road, Ballymun, pleaded guilty to assault, while Scanlon, of the same address, admitted obstructing a garda on April 9, 2008.

Brannock received a six-month suspended sentence.
