A HAULIER arrested after €1.2m he was allegedly intending to ship out of Ireland was found in the car he was driving has been charged with money-laundering offences.

Carlow man John Fitzgerald was refused bail at a special sitting of Kilkenny District Court yesterday after being stopped at a garda checkpoint on Friday.

Gravity

Judge John Cheatle said that because of the gravity of the offence and the quantity of cash involved, he was satisfied that the State had shown that Mr Fitzgerald might flee the country.

Mr Fitzgerald, of Woodbrook Place, Green Lane, Carlow, is from Tullow, Co Carlow.

Earlier, Gda Sylvia Ryan had set out objections to Mr Fitzgerald being freed pending the trial.

The court heard that Mr Fitzgerald had allegedly intended shipping the cash out of Ireland today.

He made no reply when he was charged, while in custody, by Gda Ryan under Section 7 (1) of the Criminal Justice Act.

Gda Ryan also told of stopping a vehicle driven by Mr Fitzgerald at a checkpoint at Ballyvergal, Carlow, at shortly before 8pm on Friday and recovering the money.

Judge Cheatle remanded the accused to Clover Hill Prison to appear at the district court there on Friday.
