Man fleeing garda damaged parked car
A Dublin man had assaulted a garda and was fleeing on foot when he ran straight into a parked car, damaging it.
Thomas Redmond (31) kicked the garda when he was stopped for apparently trying to force his way into a house beside Croke Park stadium.
Dublin District Court heard he caused more than €400 worth of damage to the car he ran into.
Redmond, of Donore Terrace, Brown Street, Dublin 8, pleaded guilty to assaulting Garda Shane Kiely and causing criminal damage to the car.
Judge Timothy Lucey gave him a three-month suspended sentence and told him to pay compensation for the damage.
Dublin District Court heard Garda Kiely was on duty in the Croke Park area at 11.40am on February 27 last. He saw the accused go into the porch of a house and he appeared to be trying to forcibly gain entry.
The garda identified himself, then held on to Redmond when he tried to flee. A struggle ensued and Redmond pushed the garda, kicking him in the shins.
"As he made good his escape, he collided with a car," a garda said. "It was parked outside the property."
Both the offences were committed in an attempt to escape, the court heard.
"I accept he didn't set out to assault anybody, but if you are apprehended by a garda, I think the game is up," Judge Lucey said.
"If you find yourself in these circumstances, you are supposed to come out with your hands up."
