A man has been charged in connection with the death of an 11-year-old boy in Co Limerick and is due to appear in court this morning.

Brooklyn Colbert was seen smiling happily on the street a short time before gardai found his body in a house in Ballynanty, Co Limerick, on Sunday evening.

A 27-year-old man was arrested at the scene a short time later and has been in custody at Henry Street Garda Station ever since.

Last night, gardai confirmed that he has been charged and will appear before Limerick District Court at 10am this morning.

Meanwhile, Brooklyn's funeral mass will also take place today at St Saviour's Church, Glentworth Street, Limerick.

Large numbers of his friends and family are expected to gather to say their final farewell to the youngster.

He will be laid to rest later in Mount St Oliver Cemetery.

Alerted

Gardai have also renewed their appeal for information about the incident.

Sources say detectives are trying to piece together the events that led to Brooklyn's death, but early indications are that a man who was seen with Brooklyn that day either walked into Henry Street Garda Station in Limerick or alerted them by phone.

Immediately concerned for Brooklyn's welfare, gardai sped to the scene just over a kilometre from the station, and found his body in the kitchen.

It is believed he died from injuries consistent with an assault.

The arrested man was said by locals to be a quiet man who does not drink or smoke.

Brooklyn attended nearby JFK Memorial primary school, where he was a fifth-class pupil.

The school principal said all there were saddened by "the untimely death of our much-cherished pupil".

Any person who was in the vicinity of Shanabooly Road, Ballynanty, or in the Moyross area between 4pm and 7pm on November 3 is asked to contact Mayorstone Park Garda Station on 061 456989, or the Garda Confidential Line.
