legal aid REFUSED OVER CAR

A BRICKLAYER who claimed he was getting €550 a week while he was doing a FAS course has been refused legal aid after gardai claimed he owned a car worth €10,000.

Derek Burns (25) claimed he was unable to pay his own legal fees as he owed his brother over €7,500 which he borrowed to buy the car. Burns is charged with six counts of dangerous driving following a car chase with gardai across Dublin.

The defendant, of Woodlawn Park Avenue in Firhouse, appeared before Tallaght District Court charged with six counts of dangerous driving, as well as failing to stop for gardai.

The alleged incidents took place at Colmcille's Avenue in Knocklyon, the N81 in Templeogue, Darglewood Estate, Spawell Link Road and Spawell roundabout in April.

Garda David Sheehan objected to legal aid, saying Burns owns a two-litre Saab, worth €10,000. The case was adjourned to October.
