Innocent witness called 'rat' in court

A YOUNG man who witnessed a shooting nearly a year ago was called a "rat" during a sitting of a Dublin court.

Sean Byrne (20) tried to engage another man in a fist fight after he was insulted.

Judge John Coughlan struck out the charge after he heard the other individual provoked the situation.

The defendant, of Brookview Drive, Tallaght, admitted before Tallaght District Court to threatening and abusive behaviour.

The incident took place at Tallaght court last May 2.

Garda Sinead Hennigan said the court was in session when another man started shouting at Mr Byrne, who jumped up from his seat and tried to punch him.

Both men were arrested.

Defence solicitor Kevin Tunney said Mr Byrne was a totally innocent party.
