A MAN accused of raping a nurse in an alleyway told a court there was "something wrong" with him and he had a "crazy" reaction to drink and drugs.
The 24-year-old has pleaded not guilty to rape but guilty to aggravated sexual assault and assault causing harm in the early hours of October 16, 2010.
The alleged victim, now aged 38, suffered serious head injuries including broken nose, a fractured cheekbone, genital bruising and lacerations.
On the third day of the trial at the Central Criminal Court, the jury heard evidence that the accused man changed his story several times.
Garda Sergeant William Byrne said the accused initially denied any involvement and said he never took drugs.
The accused later admitted sexually assaulting and punching the woman, telling gardai that he "lost the head" because there was something wrong with him and he had "taken a lot of stuff". The trial continues,
