Horseman's 71 bales of stolen wire

A horse owner who purchased 71 bales of stolen galvanised wire has been given a two-year suspended jail sentence.

Michael McCarthy (26) claimed he bought the wiring, valued at €5,680, at the reduced price of €1,000. He used it to stop his horses breaking out.

McCarthy, of Hazel Hill, Tallaght, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possession of the wire at his yard on December 6, 2008.

Detective Garda David Jennings said gardai, acting on a tip-off, discovered the stolen bales in McCarthy's yard.

The manager of Irish International Trading identified the bales as ones which had been stolen from his business.

McCarthy said he had bought the wire from "chaps in a van".

The sentence was suspended on condition McCarthy pays €500 for four bales of wire which were not recovered.
