A RECOVERING drug addict who stole food, a Smart watch and a hat and gloves has been remanded on continuing bail to see if he is suitable to complete community service work instead of a prison sentence.
Michael Parker (53) has also been ordered to come up with compensation for the shop owners he stole the items from.
Parker, of Seatown Villas, Swords, pleaded guilty to the theft of a hat and scarf valued at €7 from Penneys on Main Street, Swords, last Novem-ber 15.
He further pleaded guilty to the theft of a B1 Smart watch valued at €80 from Meteor store in The Pavilions last February 22.
Gda Alan Carroll said Parker has 34 previous convictions, including 17 for theft.
Defence solicitor Fiona D'Arcy said Parker has had difficulties with an addiction to drugs. He is now a recovering addict who has stabilised himself on methadone.
Ms D'Arcy asked Judge Alan Mitchell to put the case back for several months for Parker to engage with the Probation Services.
The judge reluctantly agreed, but said he "should be giving serious consideration for a custodial sentence because of his previous convictions".
He remanded Parker on continuing bail to reappear before the court on September 16.
