A TRAINEE fitness instructor spiralled into an addiction to prescription drugs and cocaine after he broke his leg in a football accident, a court heard.
Graham Emerson (20) was caught by gardai as he was stuffing a bag of cocaine into a DVD player. He was fined €200.
Emerson admitted before Blanchardstown District Court to possessing cocaine with a street value of €660.
The incident took place at Dromheath Drive, Ladyswell, Dublin 15, shortly after 5pm on September 29 last year.
Garda Sgt Marie Callaghan said gardai were on mobile patrol when they saw Emerson holding a plastic bag containing a white substance.
He ran away from gardai, who gave chase, and they followed him into his home where gardai caught him putting the cocaine into a DVD player in the sitting-room. He has no previous convictions.
Margaret McEvilly, defending, said Emerson was in the middle of a health and fitness course and had hoped to become a gym instructor, but broke his leg in an accident.
She said he became addicted to drugs, first to prescription drugs and alcohol, and then later to cocaine.
Ms Evilly said the defendant was battling a serious addiction to cocaine at the time of the incident, though he claimed he bought the drug for €150.
He has since detoxed from all drugs and is back in college.
Judge Patrick McMahon said Emerson had "quite an amount for one person", and fined him €200.
