Gang arrests after gardai seize €2.4m heroin haul

TWO members of a long-established west Dublin drugs gang were in custody after a €2.4m garda heroin swoop.

The two men were being held today after officers seized the heroin in a planned stop-and-search operation.

Gardai arrested four men and seized 12kg of heroin when they stopped and searched vehicles off the Naas Road.

The bust happened yesterday afternoon at Kill, Co Kildare, when members of the Garda National Drugs Unit arrested the men -- three aged in their 20s and one aged 51 and all from the Clonsilla and Tyrrelstown areas.

The heroin was found during the search of the back of a van, one of the vehicles pulled over.

Twelve kilos of heroin were seized and the men were brought to Clondalkin Garda Station.

Last night a 26-year-old man and a 27-year-old man were released without charge. They are members of the Travelling community.

A source explained: "None of those arrested would have serious convictions for organised criminal activity and that is probably why they may have been used by the gang involved in this.

"Yesterday's operation was a result of a surveillance operation that has been ongoing for months against a well-established Dublin gang."

The seizure is one of the biggest heroin busts in the State this year and sources say the drugs were destined for the Dublin market.
