'Forgetful' mother is jailed for petrol theft
A serial thief who stole petrol claimed she forgot to pay because she "has been forgetting a lot" over the past few years.
Simona Toader (28) claimed she went for an MRI scan to see what the issue was with her forgetfulness, but it showed up clear, her solicitor told Balbriggan District Court.
Judge Dermot Dempsey sentenced her to two months in prison.
The defendant, of Erris Square, Waterville, Blan- chardstown, pleaded guilty to stealing €50 worth of petrol from Texaco, Balbriggan, last June 17.
Sgt Eoin McDonnell said Toader drove into the service station at 6.26pm and filled her car with fuel. She failed to pay and the incident was caught on CCTV.
The defendant's solicitor said mother-of-one Toader moved from Romania to Ireland 22 years ago.
"She had the money to pay for the fuel. Her situation is the last few years she has been forgetting a lot and she went to her GP who recommended a MRI scan. The scan came back clear, but she is still exploring it."
The solicitor asked Judge Dempsey to accept it as a "genuine mistake", but the judge said Toader had been "afforded all opportunities".
