A GAA fan who shouted an obscenity at a female garda on duty at a checkpoint after the Dublin-Kerry All-Ireland football semi-final has apologised in court for his behaviour.

John Boland (47) was in a taxi passing the officer after Dublin's victory when he put his head out of the window and roared: "I hope you're from Kerry, you c**t."

After he gave a sworn apology, Judge Gerard Jones adjourned the case for payment of €200 to charity.

He said he would leave Boland without a conviction if he made the donation.

Boland, a father-of-two from The Way, Hunter's Run, Blanchardstown, pleaded guilty to threatening, abusive and insulting behaviour.

Dublin District Court heard that the incident happened in Richmond Road, Fairview, on May 28 last year.

Gda Aine McGroarty said she was on duty at a checkpoint when a taxi was passing by and the accused, who was a passenger, leaned out of the window and shouted the obscenity at her.

Hostile

She followed the taxi to Drumcondra Road and took Boland's details. He was "very hostile" when he was stopped, Gda McGroarty said.

Boland, who had no previous convictions of any kind, was summonsed to appear in court yesterday.

He had not apologised to the garda since the incident, the court heard.

Boland apologised now for his behaviour, which he put down to "over-exuberance more than anything else", his solicitor Daniel Hanahoe told the court.

Judge Jones said it was an "ugly thing to hear" and asked the accused to take the oath to apologise.

"I would like to apologise to the garda," Boland said.

"You admit you said this?" the judge asked, to which the defendant replied that he did.

The judge adjourned the case and said he would leave the accused without a conviction if he made a €200 donation to the Peter McVerry Trust.
