A construction worker caught dealing crack cocaine in the city centre has been given a six-month suspended sentence.

Padraig O'Reilly (24) had knotted packages of the drug in his mouth when gardai stopped him.

In an earlier incident, he threw a suspected drugs package into the Liffey.

The judge suspended the sentence for two years and fined him €300.

Father-of-one O'Reilly, of Neilstown Crescent, Clondalkin, pleaded guilty to the sale or supply of drugs and obstructing a search.

Dublin District Court heard gardai saw O'Reilly in a suspected transaction with a known drug user at O'Connell Bridge at 2.45pm last February 26.

The accused took a package from his mouth and, when gardai approached, he turned his back and tried to evade them.

He was told to spit out other packages, which were two deals of crack cocaine.

O'Reilly was seen in a suspected drugs transaction at Millennium Bridge last July 9.

He ran off when gardai approached, took a package from his shorts and threw it into the Liffey.

He told the officers it was cannabis.
