A MAN who drove his car in a dangerous manner while he was two-and-a-half times over the legal limit and banned from driving has been sentenced to five months in prison.
Intars Balans (31), of Clonuske Drive, Balbriggan, who has a previous conviction for dangerous driving causing the death of another man, pleaded guilty at Swords District Court to drink-driving, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance and dangerous driving on September 21, 2013, at Clonuske Drive.
Gda Derek Dalton said he received a report of a man driving a car in a dangerous manner along Dublin Street in Balbriggan.
He said Balans, who was driving an Opel Astra, started to do wheel spins and took off at speed, running red lights and travelling on the wrong side of the road at 100kph.
Gda Dalton said Balans ran from the car and tried to throw away the keys. He was arrested and gave a breath sample of 53 mg/100ml.
Balans has seven previous convictions including dangerous driving causing death in January 2009. Defence solicitor Fiona D'Arcy said Balans is horrified by his actions.
"He has a previous serious offence that has left a family without a son and he clearly didn't learn from his behaviour," said Judge Alan Mitchell.
"I cannot in any way condone his driving and his disregard for the Road Traffic Act."
He banned him for six years.
