Dad who stole crates of beer was on cocaine
An unemployed father-of-one who stole crates of beer from an inner city store was addicted to crack cocaine at the time.
On a separate occasion, Dean Masterson (29) was caught riding a stolen bicycle.
Masterson, of Kilkieran Road, Cabra, admitted theft and possession of stolen property when he appeared before Dublin District Court.
Judge Bryan Smyth was told he entered Centra, on North Strand, on September 11 last year and stole two crates of beer worth €25.
On March 14 this year he was seen cycling a stolen bike worth €250. The bike has since been recovered.
Masterson was in the grip of a serious addiction at the time of the theft, abusing crack cocaine and alcohol, said Emmet Nolan, defending.
His grandmother, who had raised him, died two years ago, said Mr Nolan.
"He knows he has a very bad record, there is no gainsaying that," the lawyer said.
The case was adjourned to give Masterson, a former labourer, time to pay compensation for the stolen beer.
