Clubber denies battering mum-to-be

A NIGHTCLUBBER injured a pregnant woman by taking off her shoe and striking her on the head with the heel, leaving her bleeding from a wound, it has been alleged.

Mary Onuoha (22), a student, denies assaulting the mum-to-be in the incident that followed an altercation at a Dublin city centre club.

The alleged victim was taken away by ambulance and treated in hospital.

Onuoha, of City Gate apartments, Mail Coach Road, Sligo, is charged with assault causing harm to the woman on St Valentine's Day three years ago. The assault is alleged to have happened at Sin Nightclub, Sycamore Street, Dublin 2 on February 14, 2010.

Onuoha, a mother-of-one, is currently in college and was a Leaving Certificate student at the time.

Garda Laura Byrne, of Irishtown Garda Station, told Dublin District Court she was called to the club and informed that the alleged victim had been struck to the side of the face and head.

The woman was sitting on steps with "quite a bad head injury" and said she had been assaulted by a female who was being held inside.

She alleged that this female had hit her on the head with the heel of her shoe and informed garda she was two months pregnant.

The garda was "very concerned about the amount of blood" coming from the woman's head and brought her to the staff toilets.

After visiting the toilets, the woman said she had become concerned for her baby's safety.

She was very distraught but gave all her details.

Judge Michael Walsh adjourned the case for a week after the court heard technical problems had arisen with CCTV evidence.
