'Callous & predatory' Tinder rape beast caged for 12 years
Tinder rapist Patrick Nevin has been jailed for 12 years for carrying out "predatory, premeditated" sex attacks on women he met on the dating app.
Nevin (37) had the sentence handed down at the Central Criminal Court.
The serial rapist told gardai he had met "hundreds of women" through the dating app.
Detectives fear there could be up to a dozen more victims.
Some of these had previously come forward but would not make statements to gardai to enable their cases to go to the DPP.
Sentencing him yesterday, Ms Justice Eileen Creedon said "engaging in dating apps is not an invitation to rape and sexual assault".
Computer programmer Nevin raped one woman and four days later subjected a second to a prolonged sexual assault in his parked BMW, after driving them down secluded "country lanes" in Co Meath.
He had pleaded guilty last year to the rape of a woman at Bellewstown on July 12, 2014.
He further admitted sexually assaulting a second victim at an unknown place in Co Meath on July 16 that year.
Ms Justice Creedon jailed him for 14 years on the rape charge, with two years suspended.
He was given a concurrent eight years for the sexual assault and the sentences were backdated to 2015.
Nevin, a former UCD student with a most recent address at Meadowlands Court, Dun Laoghaire, was previously given a five-and-a-half-year sentence for the July 23, 2014, sexual assault of a Brazilian woman he also met on Tinder.
He was found guilty after being tried at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court in that case.
All three attacks took place within the space of 11 days.
The court heard that after Nevin got in touch with the first victim (26) on the app, she made it clear that she was not interested in "hooking up" or having a one-night stand.
Nevin collected her and drove toward Julianstown, stopping at a cemetery. There was some consensual sexual activity but Nevin then raped her.
Afterwards, he handed her tissues to clean up and drove her home. He told her he had "got carried way" because he "found her attractive".
Nevin repeatedly sexually assaulted the second victim (27) over a prolonged period while she told him "no" and "stop".
Nevin became angry, calling the woman a "c***" and a "mickey tease". He told her that if she wasn't going to have sex with him she could "get out and walk".
The woman got out of the car and Nevin followed her. His mood had changed, she got back into the car and he assaulted her a second time. Nevin made an audio recording of this assault.
The first victim had told how "terrified" she was during the attack.
"After he raped me I was convinced he was going to leave me for dead in that area," she said.
The second victim also said she feared she would be killed and spoke of the embarrassment of being recorded by him.
Nevin was interviewed in relation to the rape in September 2014, when he told gardai he had "thousands of matches" on Tinder and had met up with "hundreds of women".
Ms Justice Creedon said it was clear the rape was callous and premeditated. It was degrading and Nevin spat on the victim, she said.
The fact the "cold pursuit" of the women happened within a short period of time showed a "remorseless attitude".
The second offence was a "predatory, premeditated, callous assault" in which he "tricked" the victim back into the car after she got out, then persisted in assaulting her even after she suffered a panic attack.
As well as the sentence last year for the third Tinder attack, Nevin was jailed in 2001 for seven years for a serious assault on his then partner, in which he also killed her two dogs.
In 2012, he was given a suspended four-year sentence for possession of a stun gun and the 2014 offences happened during that suspension period.
The judge said there was "very little by way of mitigation" for Nevin.
Nevin is to undergo five years of post-release supervision, on condition he refrains from personal contacts through the internet and dating sites.
He is also to attend anger management and abstain from physical performance and body-building substances.
