Boy admits bus driver assault

A YOUTH has been ordered to carry out 50 hours of community service for attacking a Dublin Bus driver.

The youth pleaded guilty at the Children's Court to assaulting the bus driver at Con Colbert Road, Dublin, on June 14 last year.

Garda David Connolly told Judge Bryan Smyth that the then 17-year-old had been travelling on the bus when a row broke out on board among five youths. When the teenager was disembarking he "kicked out hitting the driver's door which in turn hit him [the bus driver]".

Addict jailed for killing woman

A drug addict has been jailed indefinitely for strangling a woman to death with a belt in her own home.

Marcus Coates (44) was found guilty last month of the manslaughter of 32-year-old Jennie Banner during a visit to her flat in Five Ways Court, High Street, Chatham, Kent, in August last year, Kent Police said.

At a hearing at Maidstone Crown Court yesterday, Coates was told he would serve a minimum term of seven and a half years before he is considered for parole.

Man brought drugs into 'Joy

A man who said he was threatened and forced to bring drugs into Mountjoy prison has been jailed for 18 months.

Myles Kavanagh (25) of Briarfield Road, Kilbarrack, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to bringing 141 Diazepam pills, 76g of cocaine and 3g of heroin into the prison on January 24, 2011. Judge Martin Nolan said Kavanagh had made great attempts to rehabilitate himself but that it was a very serious crime.

Cameroon acts on poachers

Cameroon has launched a military offensive to flush out elephant poachers from a remote national park in the country's northeast near the border with Chad.

Defence Minister Alain Mebe Ngo'o announced the operation on state television late on Thursday, saying that the country needed to take action against the poachers believed to be from Sudan.

In just eight weeks, the World Wildlife Fund estimates that the poachers have decimated the elephant population.
