Boxer in court on machete charge

A DUBLIN boxing champion has appeared in court charged with possession of a machete and nunchuks in an incident in the west of the city.

Ian Tims (30) had the case against him adjourned at Dublin District Court.

The defendant, of Greenfort Avenue, Clondalkin, faces two counts of unlawful possession of weapons in an incident in Ballyfermot in 2008.

Tims, a former three-times national amateur champion, was summonsed to court on the charges arising from an alleged incident at Clifden Road, Ballyfermot on December 7, 2008.

Tims, a cruiserweight boxer, is pleading not guilty and Judge Catherine Murphy adjourned the case for hearing next month. The accused did not address the court during his brief appearance.

Tims was national senior heavyweight champion in 2005, 2006 and 2007 and a member of the High Performance Programme unit.

He survived a serious car crash four years ago.
