Baseball bat thug beaten up

A CRIMINAL who brought a baseball bat to a fight and came off the worse has been jailed for two years.

Noel Troy (44), of Shana-booley Avenue, Ballynanty, Limerick, pleaded guilty to violent disorder at Alder Close, Elm Park, Castletroy, Limerick on July 22, 2009.

Limerick Circuit Criminal Court heard that Troy was on bail for burglary when he got involved in the fight in a Limerick suburb.

Judge Carroll Moran said: "Troy was badly injured in a fight which he himself started."

Troy had a number of previous convictions from 17 separate court appearances.

Honeymoon trial set to start

Two men accused of murdering honeymooner Anni Dewani in South Africa are to face trial today.

Xolile Mngeni and Mziwamadoda Qwabe are expected to appear in court charged with killing the newlywed, as South African authorities continue their bid to extradite her British widower Shrien Dewani.

Police in the country believe the businessman paid the men to shoot his 28-year-old bride in the back of taxi in Cape Town on November 13 in a staged hijacking.

The trial is due to begin at Wynberg Regional Court.

Forklift attack on girlfriend

A man used a forklift truck to pick up his girlfriend's car with her inside and carried the vehicle for several feet before dropping it.

Brian Hurley has been charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon in Springfield, Massachussets.

The 41-year-old Hurley and his girlfriend argued over money as she drove him to work at a warehouse on Saturday morning. She told police Hurley slapped her, got out of the car and kicked it, then got in the forklift.

Execution for racist murderer

One of three Texas men convicted of dragging a black man to his death behind their pickup truck has received an execution date.

Lawrence Russell Brewer (44) will be put to death by lethal injection for killing James Byrd in 1998.

Another man is appealing against his death sentence. A third got a life sentence.
