A father-of-one with a business degree was caught acting as a "lookout" while a woman stole a bag in Dublin city centre.

Andrew Dermody (30) had been addicted to crack cocaine and heroin, a court heard.

Judge John Cheatle put him on a peace bond for 10 months.

Dermody, of Green Lane, Carlow, pleaded guilty to possessing stolen property.

Dublin District Court heard a garda at Aston Quay saw a man and woman acting suspiciously last August 22.

Buggy

He followed them to College Green where he saw the woman bend down. He could not see what "she was at", but Dermody was acting as a lookout. Seconds later, she came back up into view and had a bag.

She went through the bag, took items out and placed them in her buggy. Dermody was also seen going through the bag.

The garda spoke to both and they were not able to show that the property was theirs.

The accused did not recollect the details of the offence, but accepted he was there.

Dermody had since gone through detox and qualified as a crane operator.
