Couple held in ditch murder probe

A 21-year-old woman and a 39-year-old man were being held today for questioning in connection with the murder of a man in West Dublin.

The partially decomposed body of Adil Essalhi (32), who was born here of Libyan and Pakistani parents, was found submerged in a drain.

It is understood the discovery was made on Thursday evening after a tip-off to gardai.

They found the body of the father-of-four while searching a field near Belgree Avenue in Tyrellstown.

He had suffered horrific injuries to his face and body, including a number of stab wounds and an attempt had been made to burn the body.

history

He was the fifth person to die violently in the first two weeks of this year.

Gardai believe he may have been dead for up to a week and he was dumped in Tyrells-town having been killed elsewhere. The victim was well known to the gardai and had a history of road traffic, public order and other offences.

He lived at addresses throughout the city in Rathmines, Clondalkin, Clonshaugh in Coolock and most recently on Upper Drumcondra Road.

He had previously been assaulted on New Year's Day.

He was beaten up at Rochestown Avenue, Dun Laoghaire on January 1 in an unrelated incident.

A number of theories are being investigated as motives for his murder.

DEBT

One is that it may have been retaliation for the murder of another man in Finglas four-and-a-half years ago. Others are that the murder was linked to an assault on a woman or an outstanding drug debt.

A source told the Herald that two cars had also been seized by gardai involved in the investigation in the Clonshaugh area.

According to reports the information was passed on to gardai by a man in custody in relation to a different crime.

An incident room has been set up at Blanchardstown Garda Station and several people have been interviewed. Anyone with information should to contact gardai (01) 6667000, or on the garda confidential phone line at (1800) 666111.
