Council votes not to name road after Healy-Rae

JACKIE Healy-Rae's grandson Johnny has told how hard he found it to face his grandfather in his hospital bed and tell him that a road he got funding for will be called after another politician.

Mr Healy-Rae said when he arrived at Kerry General Hospital he didn't deliver the news as his grandfather was too ill.

"He was not so great now last night, so I didn't say anything even though I was with him, there was no point. When he's this bad it's only day by day," said Mr Healy-Rae, who has followed in his father's and grandfather's footsteps as a member of Kerry County Council.

At a meeting of the South and West Kerry Municipal District this week a motion was moved to call the new Kenmare inner relief road, the Patrick O'Connor Scarteen Eastern Inner Relief Road, after the Fine Gael TD who served for the South Kerry constituency between 1961 and 1969.

The motion was moved by Fine Gael's Seamus Cosai MacGearailt and was seconded by Fianna Fail councillor Norma Moriarty.

Honoured

Mr Healy-Rae said he had no choice but to put forward a counter motion that his grandfather, Jackie Healy-Rae, should be honoured in the naming of the road.

"I felt I had to do this as it was part of my grandfather's deal with Fianna Fail that secured funding for it in the first place and I felt I was entitled to put a counter proposal in because I could not face my grandfather in his hospital bed and tell him the road he got the money for has been called after another politician," he said.

He added it was nothing personal against the O'Connor Scarteens and that he had respect for anyone who put their name on a ballot paper.

Grandsons of the late TD and Jackie Healy-Rae are both serving councillors for the South and West Kerry Municipal District.

The matter was put to a vote with Mr MacGearailt's motion winning out but Mr Healy-Rae was magnanimous in defeat saying he wasn't going to fall out with anyone over it.
