THE confidence of consumers has surged to an eight-year high, as the KBC Bank Ireland/ESRI Consumer Sentiment Index rose to 92.8 in September from 87.1 in August.
Some 58pc of those surveyed expect the Irish economy will improve in the next 12 months.
"Our sense is that a range of comments suggesting some scope for tax cuts in the upcoming Budget was the key driver," KBC Bank economist Austin Hughes said. "But consumers are wise enough to realise that there will be no giveaways."
