A teenager caught with cocaine after it fell out of his sock was dabbling in the drug at the time, a court heard.

Gavin Deering (19) claimed he now has a partner and a baby and no longer has any interest in drugs.

Judge Ann Ryan ordered a probation report and urinalysis and adjourned sentencing to a date in May.

The defendant, of Cloonmore Park, Tallaght, admitted before Tallaght District Court to possession of cocaine on November 5, 2016.

Sgt Michael Ahern said gardai stopped a car driven by Deering a short distance from his house.

Convictions

The sergeant said gardai went to search the defendant and a white package containing cocaine fell out of his sock.

Deering admitted the substance was cocaine, which had a street value of €358. The court heard he had five previous convictions, though none for drugs.

Defence solicitor Eddie O'Connor said Deering was dabbling in cocaine at the time of this incident.

Mr O'Connor added that the defendant was now working, had a partner and child, and wanted nothing to do with drugs.
