Christmas release prisoner had drugs
A PRISON inmate given temporary release for Christmas smuggled cannabis and hundreds of sedative tablets back in with him, a court heard.
Convicted drug dealer Martin Murray (43) had been serving a two and a half year sentence in Mountjoy jail when the drugs were found on him.
Murray, of Dolphin Road, Crumlin pleaded guilty to having the drugs at the jail on December 27 last.
Judge Bryan Smyth sentenced him to eight months in prison.
Dublin District Court heard a search of his cell was carried out and officers saw a package fall from his clothing to the floor.
He was hunkered down and appeared intoxicated and when lifted, four more packages fell from him.
These were found to contain 204 Zopliclone tablets and 15.1g of cannabis with a total value of €710. The accused had previous convictions for drugs and theft offences.
Defence Solicitor Michael Hanahoe said the accused met with a group of people who "indicated to him that it would be in his best interests" to bring the packages in.
The prosecuting garda could not dispute this, but said the details were "vague".
