Cystic fibrosis patient Bevin Murphy was inspired to follow her dream of becoming a doctor after seeing at first hand the work they do.

The Dubliner is currently a social care worker after graduating from DCU in 2015, and now hopes to build on that achievement by going back to univer- sity in September to study medicine.

"I think it's something that has always been in me, but definitely being exposed to the environment from a young age I was always really interested in caring for people," said Bevin.

"I was really intrigued by what doctors did and always curious and asking so many questions.

"Still to this day, if I'm in hospital and I'm talking to an intern or medical students, I'm so eager to find out about how they're finding it and what exactly they do.

"I've always had the interest in science and health."

Bevin's achievements are all the more remarkable because, while she was sitting her Leaving Certificate, she was in and out of hospital 13 times that year.

Today she is as well as she has ever been, and attributes this to the exercise she does every day.

She is even hoping to run the Dublin Marathon next year.

"I need to give myself a realistic time frame," she said. Cystic fibrosis is part and parcel of daily life for Bevin, as she spends up to four hours a day - two hours in the morning and two in the evening - undertaking nebuliser treatment, chest physio and other medications to keep her condition under control.

The 23-year-old, from Lucan, is a keen supporter of Cystic Fibrosis Ireland's 65 Roses Day, which will take place on Friday.

People are being urged to support the fundraiser by buying a purple rose for €2 in participating shopping centres and Spar stores across the country, or by donating online at 65rosesday.ie.

Schools and companies are also being encouraged to get behind the day by selling purple roses or organising their own 65 Roses Challenges, such as baking 65 cakes.
