CF drug has given me new lease of life -Jillian
Jillian McNulty, one of the most vocal campaigners in the country for Cystic Fibrosis sufferers, has been given a new lease of life after taking part in a new drugs trial.
The 38-year-old says the combination drug "is the first medicine that has made a difference to the quality of my life. It's like winning the lotto."
Jillian from Longford, had been sworn to secrecy about the trial until Vertex Pharmaceuticals announced that the combination of two drugs improved the lung capacity of CF patients, helped them gain weight and prevent infection.
The drug will go to the American Food and Drugs Administration for approval towards the end of the year and is expected to get the green light within six to nine months afterwards.
For the past 11 months, Jillian has been taking the medication twice a day and it is expected the drug would be suitable for half of all CF sufferers.
"It's not a cure, but its one of the biggest treatments in the 25 years since the CF gene was identified," she added.
