An innocent 40-year-old woman has been targeted by masked men linked to one of the country's most dangerous gangs.

The three men smashed up her car and poured red paint over it.

The woman is related to murder victim Benny Whitehouse, a 36-year-old man who was shot dead in September 2014.

Her car was badly damaged during the attack late in the afternoon on Christmas Day in the Dun Saithne estate in Balbriggan, north Co Dublin.

A variety of implements were used to destroy the Toyota Avensis.

Gardai said three masked men were seen attacking the car before fleeing the scene.

There have been no arrests in the case so far.

"This Christmas Day attack on the home of an innocent woman shows that the gang have no intention of stopping their campaign against relatives and associates of Benny Whitehouse," said a source.

"To carry out such an act shows the twisted mind-set of these thugs."

The development comes as the leader of the criminal gang continues to build a huge wall around his Co Meath compound.

He is understood to be plotting more attacks in the coming weeks.

Since the murder of Mr Whitehouse, the gang has targeted a number of people who knew him.

They are chief suspects in relation to an incident in November 2015, when a bomb attack led to a van exploding in Hampton Green, Balbriggan.

It is understood Benny Whitehouse's brothers Jimmy and Clifford could become the next targets of the mob.

Gardai have been warned about an active death threat against their lives from the mob.

It is understood that officers based in Co Louth have given the brothers fresh security advice.

The gang is believed to be behind the murder of Mr Whitehouse and is suspected of the killings of Tallaght man Willie Maughan (34) and his partner Anna Varslavane.

The slain couple were last seen in the Gormanston area of Co Meath on the afternoon of April 14, 2015.

It is believed they were trying to break links with the dangerous Traveller gang.
