Call for blitz on low-cost alcohol
THE Government has been called upon to investigate the falling price of alcohol and establish standard stronger regulations.
The Mature Enjoyment of Alcohol Society (MEAS) CEO, Fionnuala Sheehan (right), said that there was an urgent need to address the unregulated, below cost sale of alcohol within the off-trade sector.
Ms Sheehan said there was a gap in the development of an industry-wide code of practice to regulate the merchandising, promotion and sale of alcohol. She said she very much regretted the decision by the Vintners Federation of Ireland (VFI) and the Licensed Vintners Association (LVA) to withdraw from the voluntary MEAS Code.
