Bungling armed thugs escape with empty cash box
Bungling criminals fled the scene of a cash-in-transit robbery with a cash box containing no money.
The thugs, armed with a hammer, threatened a security guard outside a bank in a Dublin industrial estate yesterday.
They made their getaway with a cash box in a car that was left burnt-out nearby.
However, gardai last night confirmed there was no money in the box.
It is understood the pair fled the scene of the burnt-out car in a separate vehicle.
No arrests have been made, with gardai investigating and looking for further information.
It is understood there were no injuries during the raid.
There was increased garda activity in the area in the aftermath of the incident, including a garda helicopter flying above Carrickmines.
"Gardai in Dundrum are appealing for information following a cash-in-transit robbery outside a bank at Carrickmines Retail Park," a garda spokesman said.
"Shortly after 5pm, two men armed with a hammer approached and threatened a security guard. They made off with a cash box in a waiting red Toyota Corolla car.
"The car was located burnt-out a short distance away.
"No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing.
"No one was injured during the incident. It is understood the cash box was empty."
