Borrowers slash debt

THE AMOUNT of money consumers owed to banks fell by 23pc in the past year.

The figures released from the Central Bank revealed that borrowers were eager to reduce their debts by just over €6bn.

The amount owed to the banks through consumer loans amounted to €26.97bn in July 2009, and fell to just over €20.7bn by July 2010.
