BOD and McVerry to get Freedom of City
RUGBY star Brian O'Driscoll and the homelessness campaigner Fr Peter McVerry are to be given the Freedom of the City award.
Lord Mayor Oisin Quinn's nominations of the well-known figures were ratified at last night's Dublin City Council meeting.
The award acknowledges the contribution people make to the city and also honours important visitors.
The pair will now join an illustrious list of so-called Freemen and women, which includes Nelson Mandela, Aung San Suu Kyi and the former US Presidents John F. Kennedy and Bill Clinton.
Other previous recipients include Mother Teresa, the four members of U2 and Kevin Heffernan.
The Lord Mayor last night described O'Driscoll and Fr McVerry as "inspirational leaders".
"Brian and Fr Peter are from different generations but they share much in common," he added.
"They set a remarkable example to us all by the way they apply themselves to their challenges."
An event will be held early next year to present the awards to the two men.
