Blanket clue in search for dead baby's mother

Police trying to trace the mother of a newborn baby boy found dead behind a convenience store have released a photograph of a blanket found with the body.

They hope their move will encourage the mother, or someone who knows her, to come forward.

The photograph shows a light blue fleece blanket with curved corners and stitched edges with a "Baby bear" motif in one of the corners.

The abandoned baby, who officers named Patrick, was found behind a Spar shop on Newport Road, Cwmcarn, south Wales last Thursday evening and was pronounced dead in hospital.

Shopkeeper Gursewak Singh ( 39) said he saw a Next carrier bag near the back of his shop, but thought it was gym kit belonging to one of the patrons of the nearby boxing club. Last week police released photographs of the clothes the baby was wearing and the towels he was wrapped in.

The pictures showed a blue and white striped long-sleeved top, a white Dunelm towel with a gingerbread man and heart design on it, and an orange beach towel manufactured by Arencibia, an outlet based on Gran Canaria. Police said they also found an orange vest top from George in a size 14.

Officers will today return to the Spar store to speak to local people and hand out leaflets in the hope that someone may have information.
