'Blackmail' bug hits computers

Gardai have warned the public to beware of a new internet scam which appears to lock users' computers before demanding payment of a 'fine' to unlock their systems.

The virus, known as as the Police Trojan, identifies the country a user is logging in from and sends them a message purporting to be from local police authorities.

The message accuses the victim of using their computer to engage in illegal activity and demands immediate payment to return control of the computer to its owner.



Legionnaires



victims to sue

Five people are taking legal action over a Legionnaires' disease outbreak which has left two people dead in Scotland.

The five, who are all understood to have contracted the disease, are seeking answers over what went wrong and have instructed lawyers.

Health chiefs investigating the outbreak in Edinburgh have served an improvement notice on the National Museum of Scotland in the capital. So far there have been 41 confirmed cases.



Murdoch 'role'



in Iraq attack

MEDIA mogul Rupert Murdoch was part of an "over-crude" attempt to push Tony Blair into action in Iraq, Mr Blair's former spin doctor Alistair Campbell has claimed.

In the last volume of his diaries, Campbell said the media mogul made a telephone call warning about the dangers of delaying Britain's involvement.

The claim comes days after questions were raised about Mr Murdoch's evidence to the Leveson Inquiry into media ethics that he had "never asked a prime minister for anything".



Olympic torch



zips off bridge

TV adventurer Bear Grylls completed a spectacular zip wire slide with the Olympic torch off the Tyne Bridge in the north-east England last night.

Thousands lined the river to watch the finale of the flame's journey through Newcastle, which also featured former Ireland football boss Jack Charlton.

The crowd erupted in cheers as the ex-SAS action man completed the 400m slide from the top of the bridge's 195ft arch.
