The Ballymun Road was closed on Sunday night after the discovery of a hoax explosive device.

The army bomb disposal unit arrived at the scene to investigate and the road was blocked off for two hours between 9pm and 11pm.

The device was discovered close to Gateway Avenue and DCU students living in the Gateway Student Village were evacuated.

Separately, a new programme aimed at tackling drug-dealing in the area, Strive Ballymun, was launched last night. Labour councillor Andrew Montague said drug dealing is happening in the shopping centre and in local parks.

He also said that gardai have identified and will "call in" up to 20 offenders causing the most harm in the community.
